What do you enjoy most about your role at WLC?

I love watching students grow and mature in their faith and in their fields of study. I teach many sections of COM 101 (Introduction to Communication), so I get to see a lot of students in my classes during their first or second semester on campus. It is amazing to see how much growth happens between then and graduation day!

Who has had the greatest influence on you during your time at WLC?

Olson, Lau, Uecker I wouldn’t be where I am today without Dr. Leanne Olson and Prof. Deb Uecker [pictured with Dr. Lau]. As a student, I wanted to be a professor just like both of these wonderful ladies! As colleagues, both have offered guidance in and out of the classroom. They have been incredible mentors and I am blessed to call them friends as well. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the blessings of both of these faith-filled women.

How can alumni and the college’s supporters impact what you do for WLC?

My students have really enjoyed the classes where I have invited alumni in to talk about their post-WLC life and experiences. Alumni that I have worked with in the past have shared that they really enjoyed engaging with the students and would be happy to come back again. Please share your current contact information with the Alumni Office so that we can reach out to you and bless our students with your expertise.

What is one thing you’d tell a freshman they need to experience during their time as a student at WLC?

You need to go to the WLC Christmas celebration, which include hors d’ oeuvres and music in the Warrior Underground, the Service of Light in the Chapel, and a special Christmas dinner in the Campus Center. It was one of my favorite events on campus when I was a student.

Name one area where WLC has seen the most growth since you were a student.

When I started at WLC, construction for the Fischer and Stimac Residence Halls was just starting. It was during my sophomore year that students first started living there. The cafeteria now is about three times the size it was when I was a student. Also, WLC’s football team was started not too long after I came.

What hasn’t changed at WLC since you were a student?

Afternoon Tea! It is a fun opportunity to enjoy snacks and time with faculty, staff, and fellow students. One of our retired faculty members who started this event, Prof. Mary Heins, still comes in to serve as a host almost every month.

Share one fun fact about yourself that others may not know.

When I was a student at WLC, I once “borrowed” a lunch tray from the cafeteria to go out sledding in the Quad. Another fun fact is that I play in a handbell choir at my church and have been responsible for playing an entire octave of bells for some songs. An octave is anywhere from eight to 12 bells, depending on how many sharps and flats the song calls for.

Share your favorite WLC story.

At the end of every graduation ceremony, faculty walk out of the gym, form two lines, and applaud for all the graduates as they walk between the two lines. When I graduated, I almost started crying because I had no idea that the faculty did this. It was so special to be applauded by my professors and receive hugs of congratulations. Now, as a faculty member, I get to applaud the achievements of my students. What a blessing!
