Interdisciplinary (Self-Designed) Major

Students wishing to explore courses of study not offered by individual departments or by existing interdisciplinary majors may petition for a self-designed, interdisciplinary major. Under the guidance of a faculty committee specially appointed by a college dean, such students may develop majors combining courses from several departments or areas.

Each interdisciplinary major must have a coherent thematic principle governing the selection and sequencing of courses in the major, must include a culminating project or thesis which demonstrates the outcomes of the major, and must be approved in all particulars by the specially appointed committee.

Students who would like to explore an interdisciplinary major are urged to consult with the college dean and the registrar. Interdisciplinary majors must be approved prior to the start of the student’s junior year.
