Session Descriptions

Session 1: Learn about hands-on lab experiments to teach photosynthesis in your classroom!

Dr. Allison Phillips will introduce you to demonstrations and lab experiments to teach fundamental concepts of photosynthesis. These activities will demonstrate the need for light and wavelengths of light and support photosynthesis, the water splitting step of photosynthesis, the recycling of carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and cellular respiration, and finally the formation and storage of starch as the end goal of photosynthesis. During the session, we will review the basic concepts of photosynthesis, including common misconceptions held by students. Participants will receive a kit to use with their own students.

Session 2: Microbes to the rescue!

Dr. John Werner will provide an introduction to the Tiny Earth project developed by Dr. Jo Handelsman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tiny Earth inspires students to engage in scientific research while addressing one of the most pressing global challenges of our century, the diminishing supply of effective antibiotics. Most of our current antibiotics have come from specific microorganisms that produce these compounds to defend themselves. It is possible, or even very likely, to discover organisms that produce new antibiotics. Students of nearly any grade-level can learn how to isolate bacteria from soil samples, characterize them, and determine whether these organisms produce potential antibiotic compounds. Through a series of simple laboratory techniques and concepts that we will cover in this session, your students can potentially identify solutions to a growing world problem. Participants will receive a kit to used with their own students.

Questions: Please contact Dr. John Werner via email.
