Why is my alumni gift so important?

The percentage of alumni supporting Wisconsin Lutheran College financially at any level is crucial for evaluating the college. It is one factor that is used in determining the college's ranking in surveys. Thanks in part to alumni support, Wisconsin Lutheran College continues to be ranked among the best colleges by the U.S. News & World Report.

Additionally, foundations consider the alumni giving percentage when reviewing grant applications and making award decisions. Higher giving percentages can yield more favorable responses from philanthropic organizations. Since Wisconsin Lutheran College grant proposals can involve millions of dollars, your gift is worth millions!

"Encourage one another and build each other up."  1 Thessalonians 5:11

At Wisconsin Lutheran College we believe it is important to encourage and build each other up. One way we do this is by providing an opportunity to foster mentoring relationships between alumni and students.

Those who are being mentored are often called a mentee. While a mentor may share some characteristics with a tutor, a mentor is different from a tutor. A tutor specializes in content area support. While mentors may provide some content support, they also provide general academic, social, and professional support to the mentee.

In various studies across fields, being mentored has consistently been linked with academic and professional achievement. Mentees gain an increased understanding of a discipline or an organization. They receive guidance and advice, report higher confidence levels, and gain access to networks and other resources.

Mentors also benefit. Mentors appreciate the opportunity for self reflection about their own' academic and career path, and they report gaining an increased understanding of their studies. Mentors also report increased communication skills and an increased sensitivity to the challenges others face. Mentors often list this role on applications and resumes. The leadership skills that mentors develop can be useful in any area of life: spiritual, personal, academic and career.

Under the Alumni Mentor Program, current WLC juniors, seniors and adult/graduate students are paired with alumni based on common interests, field of study and current profession.  Current alumni mentors say they help their student mentees in a variety of ways:

    • Helping students to learn to network with peers, faculty and administration
    • Improving communication skills, including a clearer sense of what questions to ask when and  where
    • Providing opportunities and guidance in regards to career and internship opportunities

"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."  Galatians 6:10
