Great Lakes Concert Tour announced for choirs
Date posted: January 24, 2014
MILWAUKEE – The Wisconsin Lutheran Choir and Chamber Choir of Wisconsin Lutheran College will tour Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ontario March 8 through 16. The choirs also will perform a February 23 tour preview concert and March 21 home concert as part of their 2014 Great Lakes Concert Tour.
The tour program will feature sacred and secular choral works spanning several periods and genres. Repertoire includes Oculus Non Vidit by Latvian composer Rihards Dubra; "The Ground," the last movement (Gloria, Osanna, Agnus Dei) from Ola Gjeilo's "Sunrise" Mass; Sergei Rachmaninoff's Slava V Vyshnik Bogu; and popular composer Eric Whitacre's Alleluia.
The Chamber Choir will perform songs evoking images of nature, including selections from Veljo Tormis' "Autumn Landscapes," O Schöne Nacht by Johannes Brahms, and Morten Lauridsen's Sure on This Shining Night. The program will conclude with American hymns and spirituals, including the Wisconsin Lutheran Choir's signature encore, Abide with Me (arr. Lucy Hirt).
Dr. James Nowack, director of choral activities at Wisconsin Lutheran College since 1994, holds master of music degrees in piano performance and choral conducting from Kent State University and the University of Minnesota and a doctor of musical arts from the University of Iowa. In addition to teaching and directing at Wisconsin Lutheran, Nowack serves as guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator at conferences and conventions on a regional and national basis.
Under Nowack's direction, the Wisconsin Lutheran Choir has developed a unified voice and a respected presence in the Midwest. The choir is committed to excellence in performance and to broadening audience awareness of and appreciation for choral music from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century. This disciplined undergraduate ensemble is comprised of 65 young adults who represent a wide variety of academic majors and minors at Wisconsin Lutheran College. The choir tours annually, and every four years travels abroad, most recently touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in late spring of 2013.
The tour and home concerts are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the number listed for each location on the itinerary (below). An image library is available at wlc.edu/choir. To learn more about the Wisconsin Lutheran Choir, visit their webpage, blog, or Facebook page.
