English Advising Information

Composition. All students must complete English 101 with a grade of C or higher. Students are placed in English 101 in either the first or second semester on the basis of high school grade point average in English and ACT verbal scores. Students who completed with a grade of 4 or 5 an Advanced Placement composition course in high school may be exempted from English 101 at the discretion of the department.

American Literature emphasis. English 210 and 211 are prerequisites for all 300+ courses (courses numbered 300 or higher) in American literature for students electing an American literature emphasis. One of these two courses (210, 211) must be completed prior to enrollment in any 300+ course in American literature. The other may be completed before or concurrent with the first 300+ course in American literature in which the student enrolls.

British Literature emphasis. English 220 and 221 are prerequisites for all 300+ courses (courses numbered 300 or above) in British literature for students electing an British literature emphasis. One of these two courses (220, 221) must be completed prior to enrollment in any 300+ course in British literature. The other may be completed before or concurrent with the first 300+ course in British literature in which the student enrolls.
