MEET ANDREW FLEGEL '17

MAJORS: HISTORY, SECONDARY EDUCATION, SPECIAL EDUCATION

CURRENT ROLE: HISTORY TEACHER AT BROOKFIELD CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, HEAD SOFTBALL COACH AT BROOKFIELD EAST HIGH SCHOOL

Why did you choose WLC?

I chose WLC because of the opportunities to play football and prepare myself for the public sector, while having a base layer of God's Word to steer the coaching and instruction.

Tell us about your favorite WLC experience.

My favorite experience at WLC was winning the Luther Cup my senior year of football (2015). It was the last time some of my best friends and I suited up together, and we ultimately became the winningest class in WLC history.

Who is your favorite WLC professor or staff member?

I'm sure I will get in trouble for not saying my dad, but Dr. Mark Murphy was my favorite professor. He held me to a standard of excellence while demonstrating the patience to allow me to grow through the times I did not match that standard.

I also need to give a shout out to head football coach Eric Treske. Coach Treske's leadership as a coach and as my employer for two years helped shape me as a player, provided me with an example on how to coach with love, and influenced me as a person, father, and man of God.

What have you accomplished since graduation?

I've become a head coach and a history teacher, had a chance to coach football at the college level, and have started a family.

What is next on your bucket list to complete?

I would love to become a homeowner, earn my master's degree, and possibly become an education professor and/or coach at the college level again.

"I support WLC because it is real. As President Johnson says, WLC is 'unapologetically Christian,' and it also continues to use that in efforts to better impact the secular world. A great example is the development of the Director of Cultural Diversity position that my father is blessed to serve in. To me, this shows self-awareness as an institution because of its willingness to provide measures to support a wide array of students who attend WLC."
