Fire Safety Policies

Any student found to have committed or to have attempted to commit the following misconduct is subject to the disciplinary sanctions outlined in the Sanctions section of the Student Handbook.

6. Setting or fueling a fire or causing smoke. Note: Campus firepit located to the east of Stimac Hall may be reserved 24 hours in advance through the Director of Residence Life and use of the firepit in the manner in which it was intended shall not violate this policy.
8. Intentionally initiating or causing any false reports of an emergency.
9. Intentionally or recklessly damaging or misusing fire safety equipment.
10. Intentionally or recklessly tampering with any residence hall/campus security system. This includes, but is not limited to, altering or propping open any locked exit doors and propping open any exterior windows other than those in student rooms.
31. No candles, incense, or plug-in air fresheners are allowed in any student residence.
32. Halogen lamps (light bulbs) are prohibited everywhere.
56. College policy and state fire regulations prohibit storing anything in corridors or on resident floors. This includes shoes. Students are expected to maintain clean, neat, and orderly common areas and are subject to fines for leaving trash in these areas. Items left in corridors will be removed.

Smoking & Tobacco: Each person has the right to choose whether or not to use tobacco products. While the choice NOT to use these products is the healthiest one, WLC recognizes the individual's rights to use tobacco in a manner which complies with the College’s regulations. It is the responsibility of the College to ensure a healthy living environment for all students, staff, and faculty. In view of health issues associated with this, WLC DOES NOT ALLOW the use of tobacco products including, but not limited to, chewing tobacco products, hookahs, or other such smoking paraphernalia, inside or near any of the buildings, or on residence hall patios. Smoking paraphernalia is not allowed on WLC property at any time. Individuals who choose to use tobacco products should:
● Do so outside.
● Be conscious and considerate of where your smoke is traveling.
● Refrain from smoking within 20 feet of main campus walkways, doorways, open windows, etc… (20 feet is 10 reasonable steps).
● Be responsible for the litter created by tobacco use. WLC DOES NOT ALLOW the use of tobacco products within 20 feet of any campus building or on residence hall patios.

In the event of a fire, the College expects that all campus community members will evacuate by the nearest exit and activate the fire alarm system (if it has yet to be activated) as they leave. Once safely outside a building, it is appropriate to contact 911 and Public Safety. Placards showing evacuation routes are posted throughout the campus. In the event fire alarms sound, College policy is that all occupants must evacuate from the building.

Fire safety education programs for all students living in on-campus student housing and all employees that have any association with on-campus student housing are held at the floor/building meeting at the beginning of each semester. These programs are designed to: familiarize everyone with the fire safety system in each housing facility, train everyone on the procedures to be followed in case there is a fire and to make all aware of the posted evacuation routes. Each student is made aware at that meeting of the college's policies regarding fire safety. Each student room has a placard posted that illustrates evacuation routes. During these programs, trainers emphasize that participating in fire drills is mandatory. Students with disabilities are accommodated according to the requirements of their disability.

Fire safety education is provided to student and professional staff with responsibilities in student housing and is taught by local fire authorities as well as the director of Residence Life who is experienced in fire safety matters.

If a fire occurs, students are instructed to immediately leave hazardous areas per the evacuation routes and get to a predetermined location before calling 911 for help. They are to remain in that location so that Residence Life staff has the opportunity to document that the student has left the building.

The information provided during the fire safety programs is also available from the office of Residence Life at any time.

Per federal law, Wisconsin Lutheran College is required to annually disclose statistical data on all fires that occur in on-campus student housing facilities. Listed below are the non-emergency numbers to call to report fires that have already been extinguished in on-campus student housing. These are fires for which you are unsure whether the Wisconsin Lutheran College Public Safety Office and office of Residence Life may already be aware.

If you find evidence of such a fire or if you hear about such a fire, please contact one of the following:
Public Safety 414.443.8500
Office of Housing and Residence
 Life 414.443.8857
When calling, please provide as much information as possible about the location, date, time and cause of the fire.
