Winterfest Review 2008: Celebrating 35 Years

Wisconsin Lutheran College celebrated it's 35th anniversary at Winterfest 2008. The day began with alumni basketball games in the REX. Former campus pastor, Paul Kelm, and current campus pastor, Nathan Strobel, led a celebration service in the chapel at 11 a.m. that included performances by the full Wisconsin Lutheran Choir.

Following the service, there was a complimentary lunch in the Campus Center. Old video footage from WLC’s early years was put into a nice presentation narrated by long-time faculty member, Mary Heins. The video was enjoyed by many in the Warrior Underground over dessert.

Then a record 1,700 fans came out for the basketball doubleheader! Joining the student body in cheering on the Warriors were many alumni, parents, faculty, staff and founders of WLC. Both the Warrior women's and men's basketball teams were victorious over the Crusaders of Maranatha Baptist Bible College. Halftime of the women's game featured the presentation of the 2008 Alumni Service Award to Ryan Barbieri ’00 by President Tim Kriewall and alumni director, Lisa Leffel.

The Milwaukee Bucks Rim Rockers team brought the record-size crowd to its feet with a high-flying dunk show during halftime of the men's game. Part of the way through the show, WLC alums Josh Schedler ’06 and Chris Walls ’05, revealed their true colors by ripping off their Bucks jersey to dunk in Warrior basketball jerseys.

After two great victories, the energetic alumni, faculty and staff made their way to the Warrior Underground to wrap up the evening with hors d’oeuvres and a look back at some historic photos from campus.

Special thanks to our event sponsor, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Thrivent's sponsorship made it possible to give the first 500 fans long-sleeve "Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior" T-shirts, host autograph sessions where Warrior athletes signed mini basketballs, and bring in the awesome show by the Rim Rockers.
