Students and alumni boost their career search

November 28, 2005

Students, alumni, faculty and staff gathered in the Raabe Theatre Monday night to attend "Power Tools for your Career Search," a workshop created by the alumni office and the career development office and led by Wendy Terwelp from Opportunity Knocks in Mequon. The first half of the workshop gave participants tips for an effective resume.  This included information on choosing transferable skills and strong action verbs. "I could tell that students found this information pertinent because we had an engaging 20-minute question and answer session that we were glad to see," said Lisa Leffel, director of alumni relations.

The second half demonstrated the importance of networking versus the "spray and pray" method of mass mailing a resume. Terwelp pointed out that 60-85% of people get their jobs because they networked effectively. "I'm glad that the alumni and the career development offices put together workshops like this," said senior Jana Hopkins.  "It's nice to see them offering students opportunities to boost their career search."

Seniors will have another chance to get a jump start on their career with "March Toward Success," a networking event on Thursday, March 16 at the Delafield Brewhaus. This serves as an inauguration to being an alumnus for the seniors, and it gives them a chance to meet with alumni who may be able to connect them to their dream job.
