MILWAUKEE – Oh Mr. Sousa!, a musical biography celebrating the marches of John Philip Sousa, will take the Schwan Concert Hall stage on Friday, October 2, 2009, at Wisconsin Lutheran College. The show begins at 8:00 p.m. with a dinner option at 6:30 p.m.
Oh Mr. Sousa! pays tribute to an American music giant whose music has stirred the heart of the nation for decades. John Philip Sousa wrote 136 marches (including The Stars & Stripes Forever), earning him the title "The March King." He also penned 15 operettas, dozens of waltzes and school anthems, wrote seven novels, and even has an instrument named after him – the sousaphone.
After serving as the conductor of the U.S. Marine Band for 12 years, Sousa went on to organize his own band. The Sousa Band toured from 1892-1931, with 15,623 performances. This musical concert and theatrical experience will feature a 22-piece concert band and eight singing actors who perform 37 roles to highlight the life and times of John Phillip Sousa.
Oh Mr. Sousa! is sponsored in part by the Wisconsin Arts Board and Waterstone Bank. The Schwan Concert Hall is located in the college's Center for Arts and Performance at 8815 W. Wisconsin Ave. Show tickets are $37 general, $34 seniors and $12 students; the dinner option is an additional $21 per person.
