Combined Choir and Band Concert will be performed at Wisconsin Lutheran College
Date Posted: September 16, 2008
MILWAUKEE – The choir, chamber choir and concert band of Wisconsin Lutheran College will present their first performances of the season, the annual fall showcase concerts, on Friday and Saturday, October 3 and 4 at 8 p.m. in the Schwan Concert Hall.
The Wisconsin Lutheran College Concert Band, under the direction of Professor Terry Treuden, will perform a number of selections by contemporary composers, as well as a transcription. The opening song was written by Jan Van der Roost and is a high energy fanfare-type composition entitled Firework. This sets the stage for a performance of the transcription of the programmatic composition The Engulfed Cathedral by Claude Debussy.
The Chamber Choir, led by James Nowack, DMA, will open the second half of the concert with part songs, including Spring Song (from The Lark) for choir and countertenor by Leonard Bernstein and Choose Something Like a Star (from Frostiana) for choir and piano by Randall Thompson.
The Wisconsin Lutheran Choir will follow with sacred selections including English composer Orlando Gibbons’ Renaissance anthem O Clap Your Hands for double choir. The set concludes with Elijah Rock, arranged by the late Moses Hogan. Characteristic of Hogan’s arrangements, this traditional spiritual features a highly rhythmic texture and complex harmonies with an exhilarating finish.
A silent auction is being held in conjunction with the concert. All proceeds will help defray costs of the choir’s 2009 European Concert Tour and will be matched in part by the West Central Milwaukee Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Thrivent Financial is a not-for-profit Fortune 500 financial services organization helping 2.8 million members achieve financial security and give back to their congregations and communities.
The Schwan Concert Hall is located in the Center for Arts and Performance, 8815 West Wisconsin Avenue. Tickets are $5 general, $4 senior and $2 students and may be purchased through the box office at (414) 443-8802 or visit wlc.edu/arts.
