MILWAUKEE – The Wisconsin Lutheran College Concert Band will present its mid-winter concert titled "The Music of Philip Sparke" on Sunday, March 6 at 3 p.m. in the Schwan Concert Hall. The entire repertoire for the concert will feature pieces by English composer Philip Sparke.
The concert will begin with Invictus, which was commissioned by and for the United States Army Ground Forces Band. Other concert selections include The Seasons, in which Sparke has taken the yearly cycle of the seasons to inspire a framework for a four-movement suite. For Albion Heritage, a commissioned piece with a British feel, Sparke wrote a folk song fantasy based on tunes from various parts of the British Isles. The concert will conclude with Jubiloso, a bright and breezy march with heavily syncopated melodies; it also contains sudden bars of unusual meter changes which trip up the march rhythm.
The Schwan Concert Hall is located in the college's Center for Arts and Performance, 8815 W. Wisconsin Ave. Tickets are $6 general, $5 seniors, and $3 students and may be purchased through the box office at 414.443.8802 or online.
