Wisconsin Lutheran College Concert Band set for Spring Tour
Band will host home concert on May 7
Date Posted: April 13, 2010
MILWAUKEE – The Wisconsin Lutheran College Concert Band will kick off its eight-stop 2010 Spring Tour with a home concert Friday, May 7 at 8 p.m. in the Schwan Concert Hall. The tour will continue May 17-24 with stops in Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska.
The band’s tour program is inspired by sacred themes. The opening number, Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light, is based on the Bach chorale and arranged for wind band by David Biedenbender. Luminescence, an original composition by Biedenbender, was commissioned in 2009 by Wisconsin Lutheran College for the 2009 WELS National Band Festival. Suite from Mass is a suite for concert band and brass quintet arranged by Michael Sweeney and based on Leonard Bernstein’s much larger Mass. Other selections include Rejouissance, composed by James Curnow, and the antiphonal Canzon Primi Toni for double brass choir, composed by Giovanni Gabrieli in 1597.
At its May 7 home concert and selected tour concerts, the band will perform a unique work by Jesse Ayers entitled Jericho, a surround-sound theater piece for concert band and narrator that invites audience participation. The narrator takes the listener on a journey to Jericho, and yes, the walls do come tumbling down! This certainly will be an unforgettable experience for both the performers and members of the audience.
The Schwan Concert Hall is located in the college's Center for Arts and Performance, 8815 W. Wisconsin Ave. The concert is free to the public, but seats need to be reserved through the box office at (414) 443-8802 or in person.
