Jim Hewitt
English Language Institute Instructor
Hi! I'm Jim Hewitt. I'm teaching in the English Language Institute, housed on the MSOE campus in downtown Milwaukee. We're providing ESL services to WLC students as well as to prospective MSOE students.
I earned a B.S. degree in education from Dr. Martin Luther College in Minnesota and an M.A. in English and an M.L.S. from Emporia State University in Kansas. I've been teaching in one form or another since 1976, first as principal and teacher in one-room Lutheran elementary schools in Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado. For 16 years, I was a reference and instruction librarian at a private college in Minnesota, while also keeping my hand in on the teaching side of things by teaching composition, Western civilization, and community education classes from time to time.
My wife, Jane, and I had the opportunity to teach English as a Second Language at Hangzhou Teachers' College in Zhejiang Province, the Peoples' Republic of China, as well as at a WELS mission in Chiangmai, Thailand, from 2005-2007. My greatest joy as a teacher has always been the education that my students have provided me - whether it was the kindergartener in Nebraska, the library student worker from Norway, Ghana, or Sri Lanka, the prospective English teacher from Ningbo, China, or the church leader in training from a Hmong village on the far western border of Thailand.
Now, I'm very happy to be "home" working with foreign students again here at WLC. "Working" – teaching and learning both!
