Fire Safety Policies

38.20.2 All cooking appliances with a heating element are prohibited in the residence halls rooms with the exception of microwaves provided by the college. This includes, but is not limited to, hot plates, hot pots, coffee makers, toasters, toaster ovens and grills. (PLEASE NOTE: Apartments/houses are not under this regulation; however, only appliances with automatic shut-off devices permitted.)
38.20.3 No candles, incense or plug in air fresheners are allowed in the residence halls or apartments. HALOGEN LAMPS ARE PROHIBITED EVERYWHERE! Natural Christmas trees are prohibited.
38.20.21 Use of tobacco is regulated on campus. The use of all tobacco products including chewing tobacco and electronic cigarettes within all buildings on the WLC campus, including stairwells, East and West Hall patios, and underground parking structures is prohibited. Students who smoke must do so outside at least 20 feet from all building entrances, including residences halls and apartments/houses.
38.20.33 School policy and state fire regulations prohibit storing anything in corridors or on resident floors. This includes shoes. Students are expected to maintain clean, neat, and orderly common areas and are subject to fines for leaving trash in these areas. Items left in corridor will be removed.
38.30.3 Setting or fueling a fire is prohibited.
38.30.7 Intentionally or recklessly damaging or misusing fire safety equipment is prohibited.

45.00 WLC DOES NOT allow the use of tobacco products, including, but not limited to, chewing tobacco products, hookahs, or other such smoking paraphernalia, inside or near any of the buildings, or on residence hall patios.

46.00 Fire extinguishers and alarms are installed strategically throughout the campus. Pulling a fire alarm sets of a series of bells within the building which notify the fire department. Fire doors must remain closed and unlocked; door jams are not permitted. Students should be familiar with the location of fire alarms and extinguishers. Do not tamper with smoke alarms, fire alarms, and extinguishers or safety devices. Restitution will be required of any student caught tampering with these devices.

In the event of a fire, the College expects that all campus community members will evacuate by the nearest exit and activate the fire alarm system (if it has yet to be activated) as they leave. Once safely outside a building, it is appropriate to contact 911 and Public Safety. Placards showing evacuation routes are posted throughout the campus. In the event fire alarms sound, College policy is that all occupants must evacuate from the building.

Fire safety education programs for all students living in on-campus student housing and all employees that have any association with on-campus student housing are held at the floor/building meeting at the beginning of each semester. These programs are designed to: familiarize everyone with the fire safety system in each housing facility, train everyone on the procedures to be followed in case there is a fire and to make all aware of the posted evacuation routes. Each student is made aware at that meeting of the college's policies regarding fire safety. Each student room has a placard posted that illustrates evacuation routes. During these programs, trainers emphasize that participating in fire drills is mandatory. Students with disabilities are accommodated according to the requirements of their disability.

Fire safety education is provided to student and professional staff with responsibilities in student housing and is taught by local fire authorities as well as the director of Residence Life who is experienced in fire safety matters.

If a fire occurs, students are instructed to immediately leave hazardous areas per the evacuation routes and get to a predetermined location before calling 911 for help. They are to remain in that location so that Residence Life staff has the opportunity to document that the student has left the building.

The information provided during the fire safety programs is also available from the office of Residence Life at any time.

Per federal law, Wisconsin Lutheran College is required to annually disclose statistical data on all fires that occur in on-campus student housing facilities. Listed below are the non-emergency numbers to call to report fires that have already been extinguished in on-campus student housing. These are fires for which you are unsure whether the Wisconsin Lutheran College Public Safety Office and office of Residence Life may already be aware.

If you find evidence of such a fire or if you hear about such a fire, please contact one of the following:
Public Safety 414.443.8500
Office of Housing and Residence
 Life 414.443.8857
When calling, please provide as much information as possible about the location, date, time and cause of the fire.
