Men take third, women fourth at NAC Outdoor Championships

LISLE, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College track & field teams competed in the Northern Athletics Conference Outdoor Championships on Saturday at Benedictine University.

Junior captain and NAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year Zach Shiels (Johnson Creek, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) lived up to his title as he brought home three gold medals with victories in the 10,000 meter run, the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meter run.

His accomplishments in the meet were good enough to earn him NAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. Shiels’ 10k time of 32:26.02 and 5k time of 15:33.39 were both conference records. Shiels holds the 3000 steeplechase record from the 2007 season. 

Freshman Blake Miller (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) complemented Shiels well, finishing fourth in the steeplechase with a time of 10:41.50 and seventh in the 10k with a time of 36:04.41.

In the sprints, sophomore Ryan Timm (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) took the gold in the 100 meter dash, breaking the conference record by .01 seconds in a time of 11.03. Timm also took second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.62.

Junior Tom Dietrich (Abita Springs, La./Michigan Lutheran Seminary) followed close behind with fourth place finishes in both the 100 meter dash (11.48) and the 200 meter dash (23.20). Junior Matt Moeller (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) finished second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.98 and third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.84 seconds.

The men’s 1600 meter relay came down to the wire as Moeller edged out Benedictine by .01 for a fourth place finish in 3:36.34.  The relay included Moeller, Timm, Dietrich, and freshman Ben Zietlow (Montello, Wis./Great Plains Lutheran).

In the field, Moeller brought home gold in the pole vault with a height of 12-9.5. Freshman Andrew Loescher (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) contributed fifth place finishes in the hammer throw (131-0) and the javelin (139-2). Loescher also placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 43-1.5 feet.

The men’s javelin throwers once again proved efficient as all four qualified for the final round. Freshman Nate Rosenberg (Hortonville, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) exploded for a second place throw of 163-5. Loescher and Zietlow finished fifth and sixth with throws of 139-2 and 137-1, respectively.

On the women’s side, senior captain Beth Windschitl (Sleepy Eye. Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) finished second in the 5000 meter run (19:52.89), the 3000 meter steeplechase (12:19.61) and the 10,000 meter run (41:04.20).

Junior Sam Sturomski (St. Francis, Wis./St. Francis) competed in seven events throughout the day, bringing home bronze metals in the 400 meter hurdles (1:18.13), the 100 meter hurdles (17.31) and the javelin, breaking the school record with a throw of 95-11.

Sturomski also charted fourth place finishes in the triple jump (29-9.5), as a member of the 1600 meter relay team, and a sixth place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.63.

Sophomore Laurie Dexter (New London, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) was the only female pole vaulter to clear a height as she one the event with a vault of 8-6.

In the throwing events, sophomore Sarah Hudson (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) broke the school record in the hammer throw with a toss 123-4. Junior captain Emily Goss (Neenah, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) finished fifth with a distance of 115-7.

Overall, the men placed third with 118 points. The MSOE men won the title with 205 team points. The WLC women placed fourth with 71 points. Concordia University Wisconsin won the title with 230 team points.

A select group of Warriors will be competing in Naperville, Illinois at North Central College on Thursday for the Dr. Keeler Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. 

 

Warriors compete at Private College Championships

RIPON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College track & field teams competed at Ripon College this weekend in the Wisconsin Private College Championships. On another cold, windy day, both the men and women’s teams finished eighth out of 11 teams.

Junior Rick LaFleur (Random Lake, Wis./Random Lake) broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 45.99 meters (150-11) and freshman Andrew Loescher (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) took seventh with a 40 meter toss (131-3). 

Sophomore Ryan Timm (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.48 and sixth in the 200 meter dash in 23.77. 

Junior Matt Moeller (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) tied for third in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 6 inches and freshman Nate Rosenberg (Hortonville, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 44.27 meters (145-3).

On the women’s side, senior captain Beth Windschitl (Sleepy Eye, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) placed third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:41.72. Junior Sam Sturomski (St. Francis, Wis./St. Francis) placed sixth in the 100 meter hurdles and seventh in the 400 meter hurdles with times of 18.15 and 1:18.63, respectively. 

Sophomore Laurie Dexter (New London, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of 8 feet, 6.25 inches. Junior Emily Goss (Neenah, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) finished sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 36.47 meters (119-8) and sophomore Sarah Hudson (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) finished eighth with a throw of 35.50 meters (116-6).

Wisconsin Lutheran will be in action next Saturday at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill., for the Northern Athletics Conference Outdoor Championships. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
