Zondag named First Team All-NAC

VERONA – Senior forward Marcus Zondag (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) has been named to the All-NAC First Team, the conference office announced Tuesday as the awards for the 2007-08 men’s basketball season were released.

Zondag, Wisconsin Lutheran’s leading scorer and rebounder, finished fifth in the league in scoring at 18.4 points per game and fourth in rebounding at 7.8 rebounds per game. He also recorded nine double-doubles while starting in all 26 games played.

Wisconsin Lutheran finished 18-8 overall and tied for second in the NAC at 12-6. The 18-win season, the third highest win total in school-history, is the most since 1996-97.

Marian College's Jordan Van Ess was named NAC Player of the Year and Austin Meier of MSOE was named NAC Rookie of the Year. James Lancaster of Aurora University was selected NAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Warriors upended by Muskies in NAC tournament

February 26, 2008

The Wisconsin Lutheran College men’s basketball team was defeated by the Lakeland College Muskies 99-94 in overtime in a Northern Athletics Conference tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday at the Recreation Complex.

Lakeland, which shot 68.8 percent (11-16) from three-point range in the first half, jumped out to a 10-2 lead with less than four minutes gone by in the half. After the Warriors tied the score at 21-21, the Muskies stormed back to go into the locker room with a 45-33 halftime lead.

Lakeland held its lead until 8:52 remaining in the second half when Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) knocked down a three-pointer to give the Warriors a 64-63 lead. Trialing 77-74 with 1:34 remaining, Madson, who led WLC with a career-high 25 points, connected on a three-point play to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Madson scored the first four WLC points in overtime to give Wisconsin Lutheran an 81-80 lead. Lakeland answered with five straight points to take the lead for good at the 2:47 mark.

Marcus Zondag (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) ended his career by finishing with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Kyle Plath (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) added 16 points, while Nate Sorum (Mequon, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) had 13. Danny Behm (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) was the fifth starter in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Wisconsin Lutheran shot 47.9 percent (34-71) from the floor for the game, while the Muskies shot 50.0 percent (32-64).

Aaron Regal scored a game-high 28 points to pace five Lakeland (15-11) starters in double figures. Kris Saiberlich scored 26 points on eight three-pointers as the Muskies shot 54.5 percent (18-33) from beyond the arc.

The loss marked the second straight year that Lakeland has eliminated Wisconsin Lutheran from the NAC tournament.

Wisconsin Lutheran concludes its season with an 18-8 overall record and a 12-6 mark in the NAC. The 18-win season is the most since 1996-97 when the Warriors finished 18-10.
