Records fall at Midwest Regional

November 10, 2007

WINNECONNE – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in a NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at Lake Breeze Golf Course hosted by UW-Oshkosh on Saturday afternoon.

Zach Shiels (Johnson Creek, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) led the Warrior men with a 28th place overall finish, the highest finish ever by a Warrior men’s cross country athlete at a NCAA Midwest Regional. What may arguably be the most challenging region in Division III, Shiels finished with a school-record time of 25:03 on the 8k course. He missed qualifying for the NCAA National Championship by just 16 seconds.

Neal Miller (Milwaukee, Wis./Grayson) (27:38), Tyler Schroeder (Sparta, Wis./Bangor) (27:52) and Blake Miller (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) (28:08) all ran personal-best times on the day. Wisconsin Lutheran did not qualify for a team score.

In the women’s 6k race, Beth Windschitl (Sleepy Eye, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran) took down the school-record, which was previously held by her sister. Her 46th place overall finish was also the highest finish by a Warrior women’s cross country athlete in school-history. Windschitl completed the 6k course in 22:56 in a field of 266 competitors.

Four of Windschitl’s teammates also set personal-best times on the day - Ruth Brown (Montello, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) (25:44), Deva Monson-Dupuis (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) (25:47), Elsa Ihlen (Trevor, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) (26:26), Laura Konop (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) (26:35) and Tammy Schunck (Green Bay, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) (27:47). WLC finished 27th out of 37 teams on the afternoon.

A memorable 2007 cross country season has now come to a close. The Warriors placed two in the top 50 at the Regional Championship, with Shiels receiving All-Midwest Region honors. Six athletes attained conference honors with Shiels and Windschitl each garnering multiple Student-Athlete of the Week awards.
