What I learn, and then apply to my classroom, makes it easier for my students to succeed - THAT has made a difference in my teaching and in my classroom!
- Nicole Bowen

  • Nicole Bowen is currently enrolled in Wisconsin Lutheran College’s Transition to Teaching program, a unique program that provides students an opportunity to obtain their Wisconsin teaching license while earning graduate-level credits. Once Nicole has completed the courses required to obtain her license, she’ll complete an additional six credits and graduate from WLC with her Master of Arts degree. She says, “I've wanted a master’s degree for years, but motivation came when my school's governing body required accreditation - in 2 years!”

WLC made it clear they were willing to work with my teaching schedule and especially that I could do my student teaching within my current job.

Nicole, a middle school and high school Spanish teacher at Heritage Christian Schools in New Berlin, Wisconsin, is applying what she is learning in the WLC classroom to her own classroom. She explains, “Whether it is the behavioral understanding of adolescents, differentiating instruction, or apps on iPads, the classroom application is clear and easy to apply.” In addition to the program’s impact on her classroom, Nicole has seen professional benefits. In May 2016, she’ll be certified by the Association of Christian School International (ACSI).

Nicole’s advice to educators seeking licensing and their master’s degree, or professionals interested in transitioning to a career in teaching: “If you are even remotely interested, start with one class and see the benefits it adds to your classroom.  Once you see how one class helps your teaching, the next class will be even better! Then, all of a sudden, you're almost to your licensing and master's goal!”
