Advising information

  • Students who are considering a sport & exercise science major should meet with an SPE professor prior to planning their courses schedule for the follow year.
  • Students wishing to enroll in the COM 405 Sports Communication elective should take a minimum of a 200 or 300 level communication course first
  • Internship is required for all majors and can be completed during the academic year or summer. It is recommended if you plan to apply for graduate school, you have a minimum of 2 credits or the internship complete prior to application
  • Students considering graduate school should investigate potential universities during their junior year. Graduate Record Exams (GRE) should be taken at the end of the junior year or early in the senior year.

Sport & Exercise Science majors – athletic training interest

Sport & Exercise Science majors – occupational therapy interest

  • A career in athletic training requires licensure from the American Occupational Therapy Certification Board.
  • Check the list of schools with accredited entry-level master's programs on the American Occupational Therapy Association site.
  • For those students seeking entry into a master's program, most programs require:
    • 3.0 mimimum GPA
    • Additional course work in: Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Physics (one semester), Medical Terminology, Sociology
    • Many of these courses are elective courses within the Sport & Exercise Science major. For additional advising guidance, speak with a professor in the major.

Sport & Exercise Science majors – physical therapy interest

  • A career in physical therapy requires a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from an accredited DPT program.
  • Most DPT programs require or recommend the following courses and students interested in pursuing a DPT degree should enroll in these course additions to the major requirements.
    • Two semesters of general chemistry: CHE 161, 162
    • Two semesters of general biology: BIO 201, 202
    • Two semesters of physics: PHY 201, 202
    • Advanced Physiology: BIO 455
    • Cell Biology prior to Advanced Physiology: BIO 331
    • These courses within general degree requirements: ENG 101, MAT 117, BIO 225 & 255 and CSC 100 or higher

Certifications

  • It is recommended all students receive one of several certifications prior to graduation. These programs include personal training, strength and conditioning, and clinical exercise specialist.
