McTavish dabbles in media, contests and cream puffs at Wisconsin State Fair
During the summer of 2005, Jennifer McTavish, communicative arts '06, was appointed one of three public relations interns for the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, Wisconsin. She was responsible for writing the media kits which included a fast facts sheet, emergency information, a daily schedule, contests for kids, bios of performers and much more.
Another duty consisted of contacting the media to set up interviews with every radio station, TV station and newspaper from Green Bay to Madison and northern Illinois to the Greater Milwaukee Area. She also had to drive to these places to deliver a practice batch of cream puffs!
McTavish, along with fellow public relations interns, handled customer complaints and questions, set up interviews and made sure both the reporter and State Fair official where there at the same time and place. She also helped to run the "Name the Cream Puff" contest. But she was the only one who volunteered to be the cream puff throughout the fair, making many appearances - once at Miller Park during a Milwaukee Brewers game.
"It was a great way to build connections. This internship allowed me to learn a lot about myself," says McTavish.
